Planetary vorticity effect
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007969
The change in a fluid parcel's planetary vorticity, the Coriolis parameter f, as it moves north or south. In flow that conserves absolute vorticity, a parcel moving poleward gains planetary vorticity and so acquires negative relative vorticity, while one moving equatorward does the reverse. This beta effect supplies the restoring mechanism of Rossby waves.
