Rossby wave

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008612

Large-scale, planetary waves that occur in rotating fluids, such as the Earth's atmosphere and oceans, due to the variation of the Coriolis effect with latitude. These waves propagate westward relative to the mean flow and are responsible for much of the observed variability in atmospheric circulation patterns. Their phase speed is dependent on the wavelength and the beta parameter, which describes the latitudinal change of the Coriolis force.
