Beta plane
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003898
An approximation to a rotating spherical Earth in which motion is treated on a flat plane and the Coriolis parameter is taken to increase linearly with northward distance, f = f0 + beta y, where beta is a constant gradient. It keeps the north-south variation of planetary rotation that gives rise to Rossby waves while avoiding the curvature terms of spherical geometry. It sits between the f-plane, where the Coriolis parameter is constant, and the full sphere.
