F''-plane
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005743
An approximation that expands the Coriolis parameter about a reference latitude and keeps terms through the second derivative, so that it varies quadratically with northward distance instead of linearly as in the beta-plane approximation. The f-plane keeps only the constant term, and the beta plane adds the first derivative. It serves as a higher-order treatment of planetary rotation in theoretical studies of atmospheric and oceanic waves.
