Beta effect

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003895

The variation of the Coriolis parameter with latitude, which influences the dynamics of large-scale atmospheric and oceanic flows. This latitudinal change creates a restoring force that tends to move fluid parcels towards the equator or poles, depending on their initial displacement. It is a fundamental mechanism for the propagation of Rossby waves, which are planetary-scale waves in rotating fluids.
