Inertial stability
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006525
The resistance of an atmospheric or oceanic fluid parcel to horizontal displacement, arising from the Coriolis effect. This stability is particularly relevant in large-scale flows where the Coriolis force dominates other forces. A fluid parcel displaced horizontally will experience a restoring force that tends to return it to its original latitude, leading to oscillations around its equilibrium position.
