Inertial reference frame

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006524

A coordinate system in which an object at rest remains at rest and an object in motion continues in motion with constant velocity unless acted upon by an external force. In the context of Earth's atmosphere and oceans, a frame fixed to the rotating Earth is non-inertial, necessitating the inclusion of fictitious forces like the Coriolis force to describe motion accurately. A truly inertial frame is one that is not accelerating or rotating.
