Absolute coordinate system

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003181

A reference frame fixed in space that does not rotate with the Earth, so that Newton's laws apply without Coriolis or centrifugal pseudo-forces. Velocities measured in it are absolute velocities and include the eastward motion imparted by the Earth's rotation. It contrasts with the relative coordinate system attached to the rotating Earth, whose equations of motion must include the Coriolis and centrifugal terms.
