Absolute velocity

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003194

The velocity of a fluid parcel or object as measured from a fixed, non-rotating frame of reference, such as one fixed with respect to the distant stars. It is the vector sum of the velocity relative to the Earth (relative velocity) and the velocity of the Earth itself due to its rotation. For most meteorological applications, relative velocity is used, as the effects of Earth's rotation are accounted for through the Coriolis and centrifugal forces.
