Inertial range

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006523

A range of scales in a turbulent fluid flow where energy is transferred from larger eddies to smaller eddies without direct influence from the large-scale forcing or small-scale viscous dissipation. Within this range, the statistical properties of turbulence are considered universal and isotropic. The energy spectrum in the inertial range follows Kolmogorov's -5/3 power law, which describes how energy is distributed among eddies of different sizes.
