Kolmogorov's similarity hypotheses

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006805

A set of hypotheses proposed by Andrey Kolmogorov describing the statistical properties of small-scale turbulence in high Reynolds number flows. They state that at sufficiently high Reynolds numbers, the small-scale turbulent motions are statistically isotropic and their characteristics depend only on the kinematic viscosity and the average rate of turbulent kinetic energy dissipation. These hypotheses form the foundation for understanding the inertial subrange in turbulent energy spectra.
