A stormy, southwesterly wind that brings cloudy, humid, and rainy weather to the leeward (kona) side of the Hawaiian Islands, which is normally the drier side. This weather pattern occurs when a low-pressure system is located to the west or northwest of Hawaii, reversing the typical northeasterly trade winds. Kona storms are most frequent during the winter months, from October to April.
