Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-001530

  1. The side of an object or geographical feature that is sheltered from the wind, or the direction toward which the wind is blowing. This contrasts with the windward side, which faces the wind. Leeward areas often experience reduced wind speeds, less precipitation, and a rain shadow effect due to the orographic lifting on the windward side.

  2. The side away from the wind. Compare windward.
