Barrier

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003836

A large-scale topographic feature, such as a mountain range, that obstructs or redirects atmospheric flow. This obstruction forces air to rise, leading to orographic lift, cloud formation, and precipitation on the windward side, while creating a drier rain shadow on the leeward side. A barrier jet can also form, which is a low-level wind that blows parallel to the mountain range.
