Barrier iceberg

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003837

A very large, flat-topped iceberg that has calved from an ice shelf, characterized by its extensive horizontal dimensions relative to its thickness. These massive ice features act as obstacles to the movement of sea ice and can alter local ocean currents and wind patterns. Their presence can block shipping lanes and create areas of open water or heavily concentrated pack ice depending on how they interact with regional circulation.
