Calving
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004120
The process by which chunks of ice break off from the edge of a glacier, ice shelf, or iceberg. This occurs when stresses within the ice, often due to tidal forces or meltwater penetration, exceed the ice's strength. Calving is a primary mechanism for glacial mass loss and iceberg formation.
