Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006436

A thick, floating platform of ice that forms where a glacier or ice sheet flows down to a coastline and onto the ocean surface. These shelves are nourished by continuous ice flow from the land and by snowfall, while losing mass through calving of icebergs and melting from below. The Ross Ice Shelf in Antarctica is the largest ice shelf globally.
