Continental shelf wave

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010444

A type of ocean wave that propagates along the continental shelf, trapped by the bathymetry and the Coriolis effect. These waves are typically long-period, low-frequency oscillations that can travel for hundreds or thousands of kilometers. They are generated by atmospheric forcing, such as wind stress or atmospheric pressure changes, and can influence coastal sea levels and currents.
