Continental platform
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004640
The submerged portion of a continent that extends from the shoreline across the continental shelf and includes the adjacent stable, low-relief land region. These extensive, relatively flat areas covered by shallow seas respond more rapidly to solar heating and atmospheric cooling than the deep ocean. This thermal behavior influences regional air mass characteristics and can amplify the height of storm surges from tropical cyclones or extratropical storms.
