Undermelting
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009877
The process by which ice, typically at the base of an ice shelf or glacier, melts due to contact with relatively warm ocean water. This process contributes to mass loss from ice sheets and can influence sea level rise. The rate of undermelting is dependent on ocean temperature and circulation patterns.
