Ice tongue
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006439
A long, narrow projection of ice that extends from a glacier or ice sheet into a body of water, such as a lake or the ocean. These features are formed when a glacier flows rapidly into the water, and the ice remains afloat. Ice tongues can be several kilometers long and are susceptible to calving, where large pieces break off into the water.
