Dry tongue
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005169
An elongated region of relatively dry air that extends into an area of higher moisture, often observed in the lower to mid-troposphere. These features are frequently associated with mid-latitude cyclones, where they can contribute to atmospheric instability by enhancing temperature and moisture gradients. A dry tongue can also suppress convection by entraining dry air into moist updrafts.
