Ablation area

The lower part of a glacier or ice sheet where the annual loss of ice and snow due to melting, sublimation, and calving exceeds the accumulation of new snow. This zone is characterized by a net loss of mass over the course of a year. The boundary between the ablation area and the accumulation area is known as the equilibrium line.
