Ablation

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-000012

  1. The process by which ice and snow are lost from a glacier, ice sheet, or snowpack through melting, sublimation, and calving. This removal of mass is a key component of the surface mass balance of glaciers. Ablation rates are influenced by air temperature, solar radiation, and wind.

  2. Depletion of snow and ice by melting and evaporation.
