Average net balance

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003742

The change in a glacier's mass over a specific period, typically a year, averaged over the entire glacier surface. It represents the difference between total snow and ice accumulation and total ablation, which includes melting, sublimation, and calving. A positive value indicates a gain in mass, while a negative value indicates a loss, with results expressed in meters of water equivalent.
