Balance year

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003786

The 12-month period over which the mass balance of a glacier or ice sheet is calculated, representing a full cycle of accumulation and ablation. The period does not necessarily align with the calendar year, instead beginning and ending at the point of minimum mass, usually in late summer. A positive balance year indicates net ice gain, while a negative balance year signifies net ice loss.
