Penitent ice

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007837

Tall, thin blades of ice or snow that form on high-altitude glaciers and snowfields, resembling kneeling figures. These formations, known as penitentes, develop due to differential ablation, where solar radiation causes sublimation and melting to occur more rapidly in some areas than others. They are typically found in arid regions with strong solar radiation and low humidity.
