Iceberg

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-001370

  1. A large mass of freshwater ice that has broken away from a glacier or ice shelf and drifts in open water, floating or sometimes grounded in shallow water. By the standard sea-ice size classes, an iceberg stands more than 5 meters above the sea surface, whereas smaller pieces are called bergy bits and growlers. Most of its mass lies underwater, and it is a hazard to shipping.

  2. A piece of a glacier which has broken off and is floating in the sea.
