Lee-wave separation
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006915
The production of short-wavelength waves in a thin layer of air near a mountaintop when the atmosphere is very strongly stable and the wind is weak. Most of the stable air is blocked and flows around the sides of the mountain, while the shallow layer that does cross the crest keeps oscillating vertically as it moves downstream. The regime occurs at a Froude number well below one, so the flow goes around the mountain rather than over it.
