Mountain lee wave
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007426
An atmospheric gravity wave that forms on the leeward side of a mountain range when stable air flows over it. These waves can extend vertically into the stratosphere and horizontally for hundreds of kilometers downstream. They are often associated with distinctive cloud formations, such as lenticular clouds, and can pose hazards to aviation due to strong updrafts and downdrafts.
