Lee eddies

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006911

Turbulent vortices that form on the downwind side of an obstacle, such as a mountain range or an island, as air flows over it. These eddies are characterized by recirculating airflows and can create localized areas of strong wind shear and turbulence. They are a form of wake turbulence and can pose hazards to aviation.
