Wake turbulence
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010077
Turbulence generated by an aircraft as it moves through the air, primarily consisting of wingtip vortices and jet wash. These rotating air masses can persist for several minutes and pose a hazard to following aircraft, especially smaller ones. Air traffic control procedures include specific separation standards to mitigate the risks of wake turbulence.
