Free turbulence
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005759
Turbulence that develops in a fluid flow without the direct influence of solid boundaries, driven by internal shear layers or buoyancy forces. Examples include the wake behind an obstacle or the mixing layer between two fluid streams moving at different velocities. This type of turbulence is characterized by its self-sustaining nature and often exhibits a broad spectrum of eddy sizes.
