Shear flow

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008825

A fluid motion where adjacent layers of the fluid move at different velocities, resulting in a velocity gradient perpendicular to the flow direction. In the atmosphere, shear flow is common in the boundary layer due to friction with the surface and in the free atmosphere due to horizontal temperature gradients. This differential motion generates vorticity and can lead to turbulence.
