Shear layer
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008826
A region within the atmosphere where there is a substantial gradient in wind velocity, either in speed or direction, over a relatively small vertical or horizontal distance. These layers are often associated with the boundaries between different air masses or within turbulent flows. The presence of a shear layer can generate Kelvin-Helmholtz instability, leading to wave formation and turbulence.
