Holmboe instability
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006262
A type of hydrodynamic instability that occurs in a continuously stratified fluid with a shear flow, characterized by the presence of two critical levels where the fluid velocity matches the phase speed of a wave. This instability can lead to the growth of internal gravity waves and turbulence. It is relevant to atmospheric and oceanic flows where density stratification and velocity shear coexist.
