Shearing instability
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008832
A fluid dynamic instability that arises in a flow with a strong velocity gradient, where the kinetic energy of the mean flow is converted into the kinetic energy of growing disturbances. This instability leads to the formation of eddies and turbulence, such as Kelvin-Helmholtz clouds. It occurs when the Richardson number falls below a critical value, typically 0.25.
