Shearing stress
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008833
A force per unit area acting tangentially to a surface, caused by the differential motion of adjacent fluid layers. In the atmosphere, shearing stress arises from wind shear and is responsible for the transfer of momentum between the atmosphere and the Earth's surface, as well as between different atmospheric layers. It is a key component in the generation of turbulence.
