Stress

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010788

A force per unit area acting on a surface, which can be normal (perpendicular) or tangential (parallel) to the surface. In atmospheric science, tangential stress, known as wind stress or Reynolds stress, is particularly relevant, representing the transfer of momentum from the atmosphere to the Earth's surface or between different atmospheric layers. This stress drives ocean currents and contributes to the generation of surface waves.
