Apparent stress
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010378
A fictitious stress in a fluid that arises from the time-averaging of the equations of motion for a turbulent flow, representing the net transfer of momentum by turbulent fluctuations or eddies. Also known as Reynolds stress, it is not a true physical stress but a mathematical consequence of the averaging process used to separate mean flow from turbulent motion. The components of the apparent stress tensor are calculated from the correlations between fluctuating velocity components.
