Gradient Richardson number
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006018
A dimensionless parameter used in fluid dynamics and meteorology to characterize the stability of a stratified fluid and the likelihood of turbulence. It represents the ratio of the buoyancy forces that suppress turbulence to the shear forces that generate it. A value less than 0.25 generally indicates that turbulence is likely to occur.
