Richardson number
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008572
A dimensionless parameter in fluid dynamics that expresses the ratio of buoyancy forces to shear forces in a stratified fluid. It is used to characterize the stability of a fluid layer and the likelihood of turbulence. A Richardson number less than 0.25 indicates that turbulence is likely to occur, while values greater than 0.25 suggest that the flow is stable and turbulence will be suppressed.
