Bulk Richardson number
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-000388
A dimensionless parameter used in atmospheric science to assess the stability of a layer of the atmosphere and the likelihood of turbulence. It is calculated as the ratio of the buoyancy production of turbulent kinetic energy to the shear production of turbulent kinetic energy. Values below a threshold, often around 0.25, indicate that shear-induced turbulence is likely to overcome buoyancy, leading to mixing.
A non-dimensional (i.e., no units) number relating vertical stability to vertical shear (generally, stability divided by shear). High values indicate unstable and/or weakly-sheared environments; low values indicate weak instability and/or strong vertical shear. Generally, values in the range of around 50 to 100 suggest environmental conditions favorable for supercell development.
