Shear line
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008827
A narrow zone across which the horizontal wind component parallel to the line changes abruptly, usually with cyclonic shear, so that winds on either side blow from different or opposing directions. Shear lines are common in the tropics and subtropics, where they are convergence zones that trigger showers and thunderstorms. Unlike a front, a shear line is not defined by a temperature or density contrast.
