Instability line
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006565
Any non-frontal line or narrow band of convective activity, such as a row of showers or thunderstorms in moist, unstable air. It often develops ahead of a cold front, but it is not itself a front and lacks the air mass contrast that defines one. The term is the general one, of which a squall line, a line of active thunderstorms, is the intense form.
