Frontal thunderstorm

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005813

A thunderstorm that develops along or ahead of an atmospheric front, typically a cold front. The lifting of warm, moist air by the advancing cold air mass creates atmospheric instability, leading to the rapid vertical development of cumulonimbus clouds. These thunderstorms can produce heavy rain, lightning, strong winds, and sometimes hail.
