Prefrontal thunderstorm

A thunderstorm that develops in the warm, moist air mass ahead of an advancing cold front. These storms are often triggered by lifting mechanisms associated with the frontal boundary or by localized instability. They can occur individually or as part of a squall line, sometimes producing severe weather before the main frontal passage.
