Thunderstorm initiation mechanism

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009656

The atmospheric process or feature that triggers the initial ascent of warm, moist air necessary for thunderstorm development. Common mechanisms include frontal boundaries, sea breeze fronts, orographic lifting, and convergence zones. These mechanisms provide the lift required to overcome atmospheric stability and release convective instability.
