Convection initiation

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004664

The initial stage in the development of a deep, moist convective storm, such as a thunderstorm. It marks the point where a rising parcel of air becomes buoyant and begins to accelerate upward on its own, overcoming any inhibiting stable layers. This process requires a combination of atmospheric instability, sufficient low-level moisture, and a lifting mechanism like a front, a sea breeze, or orographic lift.
