Lift
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010590
The upward vertical motion of air in the atmosphere, a fundamental process for cloud formation and precipitation. Air that is lifted cools adiabatically, and if it cools to its dew point temperature, condensation and cloud development will begin. The primary mechanisms for lift are orographic (forcing air over mountains), frontal (forcing warmer air over colder air), convergence (horizontal inflow), and convection (buoyant rising of heated air).
